The Dug-Out
Our Post-16 BTEC Sport centre, combining a Pearson-approved sport BTEC with nationally recognised coaching qualifications and real-world work experience in professional sports environments.
Welcome to The Dug-Out
The Dug-Out is our BTEC Sport facility, designed for students to learn, train and excel in a sporting environment. The space is set up for hands-on coaching and structured training.
A fully Pearson-approved, teacher-designed BTEC programme runs alongside nationally recognised coaching qualifications including FA Playmaker, England Rugby Tag Rugby coaching, 1st4sport Multi-Skills, fitness and conditioning, Sports Leadership and First Aid at Work.
Students get real work experience to get them ready for the next step: time in professional environments, visits to professional sport clubs and teams and seminars with past and current professional sportspeople and coaches.
Who The Dug-Out is for
The Dug-Out works best for children who:
- Have struggled with the size or pace of mainstream classrooms
- Are anxious about school and need a calm, predictable environment
- Have an EHCP, or are being assessed for one
- Need re-engagement with learning before transition back to mainstream
- Benefit from small-group teaching and 1:1 support
- Are working below age-related expectations and need to rebuild basics

Our team is highly trained. Every staff member holds:
- First Aid at Work
- Full DBS check
- Safeguarding Level 2
- Food Hygiene Level 2
- Fire Safety Awareness training
- Equality and Diversity training
- PREVENT training
- Covid-19 Prevention
Our team continuously develops and updates their skills to provide the safest, best and most up to date experiences for the young people in our care.
All activities are risk assessed and equipment is regularly checked and serviced. We are lucky to have a highly trained and enthusiastic team at Discovery, including qualified teachers and subject specialists who lend their expertise to students across all our centres.
